THE MIDDLE KEYS
(3 days, 2 nights) ::
|
Depart from the dock at 8 or 9 AM and cruise southward. South of Government
Cut (the main ship channel in Miami Beach) we veer farther offshore
to avoid the shallows off Fisher Island, Virginia Key and Key Biscayne.
After we`ve passed the skeleton tower of Fowley Rocks lighthouse, we
enter a waterway known as Hawk Channel. Semi-protected by the world`s
second longest barrier reef (only Australia`s is longer), this is a
not-quite-inside-passage that is yet not fully offshore. Consequently, Hawk
Channel will generally have calm to moderate seas even when the open ocean
is rough.
We`ll be off Key Largo by noontime where there will be ample opportunity
to stop and anchor fur lunch and/or a swim, with ample time to arrive at our
destination: the Hawk`s Cay Resort on Duck Key by mid-afternoon.
Hawks` Cay is a full-service resort which is upscale and a bit more
reserved in its overall ambiance. There are several choices of restaurants, a
variety of nighttime activities, both freshwater and saltwater swimming, and the
total resort experience as well-there`s even an onsite dolphin show! And again,
all resort amenities available to hotel guests are available to marina guests
also.
For second day activities there are a number of quite different and interesting
excursions available through the resort or your captain can take you to see some
of the rest of the Middle Keys attractions including Sombrero Reef
(excellent for snorkeling) and the waters around Marathon and the famous
Seven Mile Bridge.
Your third day starts with your choice of breakfast (both as to location and
type) and then, after your last stab at playing typical Keys` tourist (perhaps
by getting some souvenirs from one of the marina side shops) you check out and
head back. This trip can be a repeat of the way down, or ..when we reach the
northern end of Key Largo we can cut through Angelfish Creek to
Card Sound and then on to the very lowest end of Biscayne Bay for an
inside trip back to our dock.
